The lawsuit revolves around allegations of trading confidential documents for a sex tape involving – or rather featuring – the performance of 61-year-old American oil billionaire Harry Sargeant III. The stakes are high, as Novoship is seeking up to $91 million in damages from Burford Capital and its executive, Daniel Hall, who are typically known for repossessing yachts and luxury cars from those who fail to meet their financial obligations.

The controversy began when Novoship enlisted Hall's services as an investigator. In this role, he was granted access to sensitive internal documents, including bank statements belonging to Venezuelan shipping tycoon Wilmer Ruperti. Now, Novoship claims that Hall misused that confidential information, trading it for a sex tape related to Sargeant. Interestingly, Hall had also been hired by another party to investigate Sargeant's assets, which adds another layer to this unfolding drama.

As if the situation weren't complicated enough, Sargeant has made explosive claims against his own brother, alleging that Daniel Sargeant stole the sex tape from his computer. He further contends that Daniel colluded with Hall and Burford Capital in a long-running smear campaign against him. The plot thickens with accusations that hundreds of sensitive business records and private videos were illicitly accessed from Sargeant's email account and subsequently handed over to Burford Capital. This company had been working alongside Mohammad Al-Saleh, the brother-in-law of the King of Jordan, who managed to secure a $28 million judgment against Sargeant after he cut Al-Saleh out of an oil distribution deal meant for troops in the Iraq War.
